Winter is that magical time of year full of snow (or rain and mud if you live in Western Oregon like we do), hot chocolate and a snuggly sweater. We know the elements can take quite the toll on your luscious locks, leaving them everything but luscious (read: dry, brittle, split-end filled mess) and can leave your skin dry, cracked and as uncomfortable as your senior prom photos.
Not to worry. We know these tips will keep your hair and skin on point
Go big or go home…with moisture!
When it comes to moisture in the winter, you need to approach it like the 80s approached hairstyles: BIG! We aren’t talking about slathering yourself in hairspray, but it is necessary to attack dry skin on multiple levels when the frost comes. After warming up in a shower, Bottega Organica’s Nourishing Body Oil is the first line of defense against icky lizard skin. A nourishing blend of organic oils and botanicals for glowing, supple skin, this lightweight, non-greasy formula is perfect for everyday use. Antioxidants and natural vitamins flow into the skin from organic orange peel essential oil, carrots, apricots, French lilac and extra virgin olive oil. Then after that is absorbed, finish off any additional dry spots with S.W. Basics Cream. With only three ingredients, Fair Trade Shea Butter, Organic Coconut Oil and Organic Olive Oil, and absolutely no water, there isn’t a rough dry skin patch around that is any match for this ultra moisturizer. Cream is safe to use head to toe, even on your face!
Colds & irritated skin around the nose
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer may be a beloved claymation the world over, but we aren’t trusting him for this season’s fashion tips. A winter cold and the tissues that come with it can make the nose raw and chapped, and a hue to make Rudolph himself proud. When the sniffles hit, use extra-soft tissues, like Seventh Generation’s 100% Recycled Facial Tissues, and blot the nose; don’t rub it. Apply a thin layer of moisturizing ointment (seriously, Cream will become your best friend in the winter) to the sensitive area throughout the day.
Rough cracked feet
Nothing screams “dead of winter” like gnarly, callused feet with cracked heels. Repair severely dry, cracked and coarse skin with Odacite Intensive Hand and Heel Treatment. Extraordinary shea butter pairs with olive & sunflower oils to quench and heal severely dry skin. Alphahydroxy acids derived from fruit and sugar help skin stay soft and smooth, while lemon, spearmint, grapefruit & rosemary provide an immediate refreshing effect as well as potent anti-fungal and antibacterial support.
A dry, flaky scalp is uncomfortable and just a wee bit embarrassing, too. The first step in preventing dandruff is to take cooler, quicker showers to reduce the scalp’s exposure to drying hot water. Before you shower massage the scalp with a rich oil – we recommend Kumari Luxury Hair Oil. This will replenish natural scalp oils and moisturize dry hair. Also, washing the hair and scalp with a mint based shampoo daily can help a dry, itchy head. The Seaweed Bath Co. Balancing Eucalyptus & Peppermint Shampoo is a nourishing combination of bladderwrack seaweed with soothing argan oil and essential nutrients to naturally cleanse your hair and scalp while maintaining healthy moisture and shine.
There is nothing fun about chapped lips. They look gross, they feel gross and they downright hurt! Thankfully, with Treat Beauty’s Peaches & Cream Lip Balm you can hold onto a shred of summer with the fruity scent while keeping cracked lips at bay. At more than triple the size of a normal lip balm, this adorable balm is guaranteed to last you all winter.
How are you supposed to paint your lovely fingertips when they are splitting apart!? Answer: Lillian Eve Cuticle Oil. Cuticle oil isn’t just good for the side of your nails. Massage a little bit of this in, and if necessary, sleep with gloves on until it is absorbed. Follow up with a couple of coats of Aila nail polish, and your fingernails are fabulously fancy.
Rough and static-y hair
Hair needs extra TLC during wintertime. Wind and cold strip the hair of moisture and leave you with a knotty nest that birds will start mistaking for home. Acure Organics’ Hair Mask is the where-have-you-been-all-my-life deep conditioning treatment that restores moisture, manageability, shine and strength. With nourishing organic Argan oil and CoQ10, this acidifying treatment will protect the hair cortex, locking in moisture and color, while Argan stem cells dive into the follicle to strengthen, nourish and regenerate hair at the root. Great for treated, mistreated, blown out, blown up, limping-to-the-finish-line hair of all sorts.
Some parts of our body like to get a little more unruly than others and our elbows can sometimes be jerks when it comes to being rough. Gressa’s Renewing Polish is an all in one brightening, clarifying, exfoliating, and moisturizing treatment. Great for your face and wonderful for everywhere else, the secret to its success is the synergy between rice enzymes, alpha hydroxy acid, and Vitamin C. It’s just the drill sergeant your elbows need to whip them into shape.
Kudos to those who enjoy the great outdoors even when it’s frigid outside. Protect sensitive skin by layering on sunscreen (yes, we know it’s cloudy, but trust us here) like Elemental Herbs Sunstick before you go out, with a protective balm, like Combat Ready Balm, to soothe chapped skin. This combination is key, because although it is cloudy the sun’s rays can still hit you hard and the only thing worse than windburn is windburn AND winter sunburn.
