How Bedrock Skin Started
“It was our California anniversary getaway weekend. I wanted to be fun and flirty. Instead, I felt like ripping my armpits out. I had a raging rash and NOTHING would fix it. The pain provoked me to quit shaving and ditch deodorant. Definitely not romance in the air. In the car, my husband starts droning on about Gary, his childhood pal who also had an armpit rash. In a flash of desperation, I thought of zinc oxide.
We drove to the closest drugstore and within minutes of using it, my armpits were calm. Then I sniffed myself.
The stench was gone. I was instantly hooked and wanted to create a zinc oxide line to get those amazing ions in ALL of my skin care. But after my epiphany, I did absolutely nothing. For months, I pushed the idea away and told myself it would be great for later. The idea just wouldn’t leave me alone, so I finally started contacting labs. It took over a year of starts, stops and stalls, but eventually, Bedrock was born. As a mom, I seem to find endless ways to use our balms: dry itchy skin, kids’ cuts and scrapes, cracked lips, cuticles, chapped cheeks, toe funk, PMS pores, bug bites, bikini bumps and more. I’m not your typical beauty maven or cosmetics connoisseur and it’s better that way. Zinc is our all-star and I’m just the talent agent. ” – Rachel Wernet

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 (beauty & wellness) products could you not live without? (You have food and water)
Bedrock Balm (good for the bug bites, itches, dry skin, chapped lips, island funk, sun deflector, and doubles as a deodorant paste), a razor and a yoga mat to sleep on.
What is your morning routine? Evening?
I wake up and pray for my day, get breakfast going, make lunches and swap carpool texts. I walk my daughter to school. I hit the gym before I drop my son off at preschool and then it’s heads-down until pick-up time. Somewhere in there I’ll shower or dry shampoo.
Evenings are a mix of dinner prep, activities, homework and clean-up. After the kids go to sleep, I’ll relax with my husband or go see girlfriends.
What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
1. Sleep. No under-eye concealer can do what sleep can do.
2. On your down days – call a friend, journal, read, get exercise and let go of your to-do list. Your energy will come back another day and you’ll make up for it.
3. Massages. They are the ultimate self-care ritual for me. I savor them.
What’s your favorite part about running Bedrock Skin?
I literally feel like a fairy godmother with magical powers from zinc oxide. My customers find such unique ways to use Bedrock on skin problems. They also learn new ways to apply it by reading other reviews. One mom said Porefector has made a tremendous improvement in her daughter’s acne, and that in turn improved her self-confidence. She said that has made a much happier 14-year old at home! I love hearing things like that.
What’s a trend in the wellness/beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
Beauty brands being real with their customers. I love how Instagram can connect the founder to fans so they can be educated and inspired.
What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
Porefector is a lifesaver for PMS pores and bikini bumps. I use Bedrock Balm for everything else. If I had to choose one? So hard. I would go Bedrock Balm.
What sets Bedrock Skin apart from other lines on the market today?
Zinc oxide. It’s the only reason I started the line and the reason it produces such powerful results. Generic zinc oxide creams have 15-25% zinc oxide, just like us. The comparison ends there. Typical zinc products can have a mix of cetostearyl alcohol, cetomacrogol 1000, liquid paraffin, mineral oil, white wax or vaseline petrolatum, titanium dioxide, steareth-20, colloidal sulfur, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, bentonite, imidazolidinyl urea, methylparaben or propylparaben. We include none of those. We also always list the zinc oxide percentage on every product.
The other reason we’re different is that giving back is part of our business plan. We’ve made an up-front commitment to financially support two Honduran villages so they receive micro-loans, health services, education and farming expertise.
We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies. What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out? (think superfoods, supplements, teas, elixirs and the like)
1. Morning lemon water is a powerhouse glass of good for your body.
2. I quit caffeine. I only drink decaf if I do, and I can’t believe how much calmer and sweeter I am in the mornings.
3. I eat greens by the pound and am obsessed with Tessamae’s dressings. Find veggie dips or drizzles that you love and you’ll look forward to eating them. Next I want to master making miso dressing.
Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
All of the nasty stuff like lead, parabens, phthalates and formaldehyde.
What do you do to stay active and why?
I’m active because it’s part of my lifestyle and I love how it feels. I belong to the neighborhood YMCA because they have an awesome kids program. My pre-schooler loves it – that gets me in 4 times a week. The girls that work there are Bedrock testers. I live close to a lake so I can roll out of bed and run around it on weekends. Being active with my family is also weekend fun. During the winters, I’m on the slopes trying to keep up, and during the summers we are starting to hike more and go mountain biking.
Do you have a favorite beauty boosting meal you’d like to share a recipe for?
Yes! This recipe is from Confessions of a Fit Foodie. It’s a one-pot easy skillet for lunch or dinner.
Find the recipe here: https://confessionsofafitfoodie.com/2016/04/21-day-fix-sausage-bean-and-kale-skillet/
Ingredients: olive oil cooking spray, 1 package Italian chicken sausage, 3 cups of kale (I sometimes use arugula which is delicious too), 1 cup of chickpeas, 1 1/2 cups of crushed tomatoes, 1 tsp Italian seasoning and 2/3 shredded mozzarella.
Instructions: Cook the chicken sausage, chop up and add the kale, drain, rinse and add the chickpeas. Pour the crushed tomatoes over the skillet, along with the spices and cook for 2-3 minutes before topping with cheese. Let it simmer until the cheese is melted.
Do you have a hero? If so, who and why?
My hero right now is a mom named Meghan who lives down our street. She went through all the hoops to become a foster parent and just took in a little girl. She’s an ordinary person making an extraordinary impact on this girl’s heart for the rest of her life.
What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned?
I was hesitant to start Bedrock. There were a million reasons not to do it in such a saturated, competitive industry, especially without a beauty pedigree. I decided it was better to face fears instead of regret. I tell myself that I can do hard things, and to get something I’ve never had, I’ll have to do things I’ve never done.
Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust?
Beauty does not have to be expensive. Beauty is found in joy, generosity and kindness. It radiates in your eyes when you look at someone and smile. Beauty products can promise the moon and the stars and cost just as much. Happy and healthy skin doesn’t require your whole paycheck. I have made it a priority for Bedrock to be accessible yet still contain pharmaceutical grade non-nano zinc oxide, high quality ingredients, be cruelty-free and priced below $25 with free shipping.
