The Mr. B’s Necessities family started creating 100% natural bath and body products in 2012, and they’ve never looked back. The idea to make pure, sustainable, plant-based bath and body products came when Shem & Laura started using their son’s baby food jars to make essential oil candles. They loved the fresh smell of these aromatherapy candles so much that they figured others might too. They were right! We loved featuring their Travel Tin Essential Oil Candles in our box in May.
Peek into the inner workings of Mr. B’s necessities with Shem Gott below.
What’s your favorite part about running Mr. B’s Necessities?
It’s hard to pick just one thing, but probably the freedom it affords. Freedom to choose which direction we want to go with our product line, freedom to gift friends and family with free items, freedom to choose when we want to work and spend time with family, etc.
What sets Mr. B’s Necessities apart from other lines on the market today?
One major difference that sets Mr. B’s apart is the quality of our products. Since they are not factory made and are 100% plant-based, our items are second to none. I’m appalled every time I read the ingredients list of “natural” bath and body product on the shelves of major retailers. The amount of chemicals and filler ingredients is very disappointing.
What was the first product available to customers to purchase?
We started with essential oil candles. In fact, for the first 2 years we were solely a Essential Oil Candles company, but I’ve always had a desire to make bath and body products, so essential oil candles became a launching point.
Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
The deodorant is my favorite, hands down. It’s also my customer’s favorite. It is the best natural deodorant I’ve ever used, and I’m very proud of it.
What is your morning routine? evening?
Loose leaf tea and Bible reading/prayer at 6am. Then when my wife and our three kids (Abraham, 7 years old; Poppy, 5 years old; and our newest little one is due any day) wake up around 7am, I make breakfast, we do a family Bible time and then I head off to the shop.
What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
1. Get lots of sleep. My wife and I try and get in bed around 9pm and I try and wake up at 6am.
2. Eat less sugar and don’t eat late at night. I have a sweet tooth, but I keep my hand off anything with processed sugar and try and get my sweets from fruit or natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey. Similarly, I have a 7pm cut off time for eating. After 7pm, I only allow myself caffeine free tea.
3. Drink lots of water. I try to drink at least 1800-2400 ml a day. This is one of the best skincare tips I can offer. Drink water!
What’s a trend in the wellness/beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
Less ingredients. Most product lines have way too many ingredients. We strive to have as few ingredients as possible. Most of our products consist of 5 or less ingredients. The few exceptions include extra, plant-based ingredients that are necessary. Never filler ingredients.
Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty/wellness/lifestyle products?
This is a tricky question because other than my own products, I don’t use much else! But, if I can stretch beyond bath and body, my first “must have” items I use are sun sleeves and sun hats. If I am going to be in the sun, whether driving in the car or at a park with my kids, I wear sleeves on my arms and, when outside, a hat that covers my face and neck. This is critical for keeping my skin looking young and preventing cancer later on. Secondly, my family uses grapefruit seed extract. This is a fantastic both in liquid and pill form. We use it to boost immunity. It is especially effective when you have an upset stomach or when the flu is going around. It tastes terrible, so mixing 10 drops with orange juice cuts the sour taste. Finally, loose leaf tea. One of my favorite brands is Tea Culture (www.teacultureco.com). Tea is so much healthier than coffee and has amazing antioxidant and cancer-fighting properties.
What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
Tanning. Whether it be a tanning bed or good ‘ol fashion sun tanning, this is definitely a short term gain/long term loss for your skin. Your skin will look older and worn out in later years, and cancer is always an issue.
Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust?
I’d like to reiterate the importance of sleep and diet. Most people try and find miracle products with anti-aging properties, but at the end of the day, eating clean, drinking lots and sleeping well is equally as important as what we put on our skin. Beyond that, choosing plant-based skincare is important also. The key is simplicity. Simple life, simple skincare routine.
Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
Anything developed in a lab. We follow two general rules, “If you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your skin” and “If you can’t pronounce name of the ingredient, don’t trust it.”
Do you have a hero? If so, who and why?
Jesus. They called him the Prince of Peace. That’s the kind of man I want to follow.
