AILA Founder Dr. Cary Gannon

Meet AILA Founder & leading podiatrist Dr. Cary Gannon. After an “Awakening”, Cary started eliminating things (and people) in her life that were not healthy.  Taking care of her body and eliminating as many unwanted ingredients as possible became a priority.  She started nourishing her body with the right foods instead of restricting calories (read the color story ‘Wheatgrass‘).  Cary began focusing not only on what she put into her body but also what she put on my body. Thus, the idea for AILA was born!

“It is fair to say that, I am proud of AILA and what our products represent in the beauty industry.  AILA symbolizes transformation.  Not just my transformation, but change for all women who are caught in a cycle.  No longer do women have to sacrifice health for beauty and function.  We want our products to be free of as many harmful chemicals as possible, while maintaining beauty and function.” – Cary

Dive deeper into the story behind AILA along with some of Cary’s current favorite products, why she stays off Facebook, and what rules the world. (Hint: it’s not money!)

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 (beauty & wellness) products could you not live without?  (You have food and water)
This is going to sound very boring but here they are in no particular order:
1) Silk eye-mask for sleep, I currently use the ‘Slip’ brand
2) Pumice stone. I literally use a pumice stone on my entire body every other day. It naturally removes so much dead skin and body hair and leaves my skin luxuriously soft.
3) A massive tub of AILA’s Coconut Cuticle Oil Therapy. I use it for everything. I moisturize my entire body with it and even use it in my hair. I can wash my face with it, use it as a chapstick, heal wounds, fight infections, eat it, cook in it, use it as sunscreen, etc. etc…. . LOL!

What is your morning routine? evening?
Morning. The first thing I do is read my daily bible verse and pray for my children, my family and my dog. I also pray for the day and that I am of help to my patients. Then I start chugging water. I drink at least 32 oz. of water before I allow myself a cup of coffee (then I drink a lot of coffee). As soon as I am up and moving around I don’t stop. I’m getting kids ready and out the door then I’m to the office to see patients or to the OR to operate.

Evening is kids’ activities, homework and supper. I do some form of exercise daily. Right now I am really into yoga and running. We have new silks in the basement so I have been learning how to use them with my children. Then it is downtime with each child. I spend time with each child in their bed every night just talking and laughing or reading. Eventually I take some time for me. I light candles and take a bath and just relax. I have to have that time to re-center so that I am an effective mother and partner.

What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
1) PUT DOWN THE PHONE, TURN OFF THE TV AND DON’T BE ON THE COMPUTER. Talk to your family and real people and cultivate relationships. Do not participate in all of the negativity in the world. Focus on your local community. I feel like a zombie when I’m looking at a screen all the time and I get depressed if I watch TV. I’ve learned to STAY OFF Facebook and I don’t watch the news because the negativity and the drama personally affect me. It makes me completely depressed and anxious and it is negative energy that I do NOT need.
2) Yoga. Power Yoga releases my body and my mind. I always feel amazing after yoga and I try to do it everyday.
3) Drink water. I really try to drink a gallon of water a day. It makes an incredible difference for your body.

What’s your favorite part about running AILA?
AILA has opened the door to many new relationships with amazing people who I would have never had an opportunity to meet otherwise. I believe that relationships are the global currency, not money. With AILA, I get to meet and connect with people all over the world!

What’s a trend in the wellness/beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
I’d like to see wellness products become affordable for more people. AILA has already committed to this and the feedback has been wonderful. I’d like to see more brands follow suit.

What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
The trend of everyone telling others they are not doing enough to be ‘green’ enough or ‘healthy’ enough. I wish everyone would stop being so hard on each other and each others’ products. Everyone I know in this industry is working very hard to make products better but we cannot make them absolutely perfect for everyone. Every time I open my inbox I cringe because there is always a complaint from someone that I’m not doing enough to make every product fit every ‘green’ or ‘wellness’ parameter. Every product comes with some limitations on perfection. My children and I have been viciously attacked by bloggers who lied about our products and about me. I am tired of the negativity in all facets of life. I naively thought that the ‘wellness’ beauty industry would be more loving to pioneers trying to make things better.

Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
Damn. Don’t ask me this! I’d have to say our 3-in-1 Nail Color Remover with Pure Argan Oil.

What sets AILA apart from other lines on the market today?
Our spunk and our commitment to improvement in perpetuity.

We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies.  What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out? (think super foods, supplements, teas, elixirs and the like)
1) DRINK WATER ALL DAY
2) Supplement collagen in your diet if you aren’t getting enough. I am currently using Modere Liquid BioCell Skin
3) 1 oz. wheatgrass with 1 oz. ginger daily

Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs? Parabens

Do you have a favorite beauty boosting meal you’d like to share a recipe for?
No! Hahahaha! I am a mother, surgeon, wife and owner of AILA. I have zero time to cook or prepare meals. My older daughter MacKenna makes me a healthy lunch everyday for me to take to work and my husband helps with supper. I consider their help a huge blessing!

Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty/wellness/lifestyle products?
1) One Love Organics Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil and Make up Remover
2) CV Skin Labs Calming Moisture
3) Mother Dirt Face and Body Cleanser

Do you have a hero? If so, who and why?
I don’t. I have many people who I greatly admire but I don’t put anyone on a pedestal and make them a ‘hero’. I don’t think that is fair to them. Everyone is fallible. Everyone makes mistakes. When heroes make mistakes the mistakes are magnified. Heroes receive less grace for their mistakes. Heroes are harder to forgive. Normal people are permitted to make mistakes and are forgiven and given grace. I feel like viewing someone as a hero places too much pressure on them to be perfect. It’s not fair.

What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned?
Control is an illusion. We control nothing. We believe we control everything but we legitimately have no control. The realization that we actually have no control actually gives us control of ourselves and allows us to fully live in peace. Trying to control everything and everyone around us creates stress and pain for us.

Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust?
One of the most irritating ‘myths’ in the beauty industry is that all chemistry is ‘bad’ and everything natural is ‘good’. Life is chemistry and the greatest chemist is Mother Nature. She will naturally kill you in a hot minute. The air we breathe and the water we drink are both chemicals. If you drink too much water too quickly you die from cardiac arrest. If a product is ‘natural’ it isn’t automatically good for you. There are plenty of ‘natural’ chemicals that are not good for you. The converse is also true. Just because something is ‘man-made’ does not mean it is bad for you. Even essential oils contain anywhere from 80-300 chemicals and can cause injury to humans when used incorrectly or overused.
