A Look Inside Sahajan with Lisa Mattam

A Look Inside Sahajan with Lisa Mattam

Lisa Mattam of Sahajan

Sahajan is an evidence-based natural Skincare Line based on the the 5,000-year-old science of Ayurveda. Derived from the Hindi word for “intuitive” – Sahajan brings you the evidence to follow your intuition and chose clean beauty. Sahajan was born when founder Lisa Mattam was inspired to switch to clean beauty.  She have always tried to eat healthy, and work out, and came from a long line of yogis, but somehow she had never translated those habits to skincare. As a former pharmaceutical executive, Lisa realized that she could use that rigour to create a line of products that was founded in the ancient science of Ayurveda (the science in which she was raised) and prove it in modern science. Their team in Canada worked with leading Ayurvedic doctors in Kerala, South India to develop the collection. All of their products have been through either extensive regulatory reviews, clinical trials or consumer testing.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 (beauty & wellness) products could you not live without?  (You have food and water) Hmmm… 1) For sure our Nourish Face Cream, the clinicals on it are amazing and it’s such a luxe cream, it would protect me from the environment. 2) Coconut oil, I would use it for my hair and my body. 3) I would say Sun Potion Ashwangandha – it would help with the stress!

What is your morning beauty routine? evening? Morning, feels low key. First is always a glass of water…I rinse my face, toner, eye cream, face cream, makeup, oh and I straighten my hair almost everyday so that also needs to happen. Not so low key? Evening, cleanse, serum, eye cream, face cream and then my last water for the day.

What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best? Feeling your best changes the way you look at yourself.
I do my best to take a breath every morning before I start the day. I have a a little space in my basement with a candle and a prayer card. Sometimes that visit is two minutes, sometimes it’s ten. Sometimes it includes a sun salutation, sometimes, it’s interrupted by my cute and crazy kids saying, “whatcha doing down there?”. That is the best way I can feel great about the day – it builds my strength.

I love water. you can tell when I am not drinking enough water simply by looking at my skin (and my body shows it too). It’s an easy way to look and feel your best.

Mascara. I never wore mascara until last year, and then, I met a makeup artist who told me that if I didn’t have any time to use great skincare and some mascara. It always open your eyes and makes them more inviting. I do that every day now.

What’s your favorite part about running Sahajan? The exhilaration of growing the brand from scratch and working on a business that ultimately aligns with my values. I feel like I am always on a wellness journey. Some days are better than others. Some days, I have chia pudding for breakfast. As last week was Halloween, admittedly, I ate all my kids Kit Kat bars over the last week when they were sleeping. I love growing a company where we believe in wellness and we understand the real journey and do our best to support that every day.

What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow? Not a surprise that I would say “The Natural Trend”, but with a definition of what natural is. We follow the EU guidelines in natural and plan to get a Natrue Certification so that our customers understand what natural is and what greenwashing is.

What beauty trend would you like to see disappear? Greenwashing. I picked up a shampoo on the shelf that had the word natural in it. It also had synthetic fragrance, silicones, PEGS – it was crazy. We need more regulations for the word natural.

Of the products you make, which is your favorite? This is hard, it’s like asking me which is my favorite child, but I would have to say our Nourish Face Cream. When we first made it, I had an advisor tell me that I either needed to change the ingredients or the price. I did neither, because I wanted our customers to really see the results of a natural product. In clinical studies, 100% of customers had a minimization in fine lines and wrinkles and 100% said it made their skin brighter.

What sets Sahajan apart from other lines on the market today? We provide our customers with the evidence to choose clean beauty. All of our products have gone through regulatory reviews to ensure the clinical accuracy of our claims and we do clinical trials. I believe in the science of naturals and that’s what we provide.

We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies.  What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out? (think superfoods, supplements, teas, elixirs and the like) I think we can get a lot of our necessary nutrients from food, but we don’t eat enough healthy stuff. Ask yourself at every meal, have I eaten anything with color in it and that will tell you how healthy you are. Other things I like: 1) My parents are from Kerala in India so one of our foods is called a Dosa. It’s fermented rice flour made like a crepe. It is so good for you and it’s so delicious with coconut chutney or a lentil dish. 2) I have recently gotten on the chia bandwagon. I admit it :) I am now in the practice of making a quick chia pudding on the weekend – throwing some fruit on top and calling that breakfast. It’s awesome. 3) I am a big fan of smoothies. I make one which has one cooked beet, one orange, one apple, some spinach and a couple of strawberries, a tiny bit of water and some ice. Delicious…

Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs? Paragons for sure. I actually do my best to avoid the dirty dozen

What do you do to stay active and why? This has been a changing answer over the last few years. Years ago, I was a fitness instructor, teaching spin. These days, I have to balance the business, the travel, and the kids. I have recently taken up running but I run really slow!!! I am doing it though. I am starting to like it not just for the physical exercise because it clears my mind, it gives me some time to think.

Do you have a favorite beauty boosting meal you’d like to share a recipe for? The beet smoothie recipe for sure – add in some Beauty Chef Powder and you are done!

Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty/wellness products? One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleanser, Eugenia Shea Shea Butter (for the dry spots), and Kaia Naturals Juicy Bamboo Wipes.

Do you have a hero?  If so, who and why? My parents – I can’t imagine their journey. My dad left India a university professor, arrived to Toronto in 1969 and worked in a factory while he redid university. My mom came to Toronto a single woman and has incredible stories of her life here. I think I admire them most though for what they taught me and how they support me. They taught me to believe in myself, to be brave, to be humble, to be kind. They are brilliant people.

What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned? That not everything is in my control. I am learning to control my part and surrender the rest.

Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust? The criticism of preservative. I come from the pharma industry – and one thing you get from that experience is the value of clinical rigor. There is nothing worse for your skin than a poorly preserved product. If someone is making something like a cream without preservative – they would need a special mechanism to ensure it won’t go off and grow mold. When dealing in naturals, would you ever make yourself a smoothie and drink it next month? We in the natural industry have to champion good practice so that our customers get the best for their skin.
