If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 (beauty & wellness) products could you not live without? (You have food and water)
Let’s see…definitely my yoga mat (it’s an Adidas x Stella McCartney collab) so I could bring my daily OM, ground myself and not FREAK OUT that I was stranded! Poéthique’s Facial Recovery Elixir would keep my skin balanced, healthy and glowing no matter what. And my Ilia 99 Red Balloons lip crayon would have me looking pretty fly when the rescue boats come along.
What is your morning beauty routine? evening?
They’re fairly simple in that it’s a cleanse with Poéthique’s Deeply Cleansing Milk, treat with our Radiance Boosting Serum, and hydrate/nourish routine. The difference is in the morning I use an SPF moisturizer and at night I use our Facial Recovery Elixir. For make-up, it’s typically a dab of W3LL People concealer, some Ecobrow Wax on the brows, and some lip whip that we’ve been working on to keep the pucker nice and moisturized! Between growing Poéthique, raising two little girls and all the attendant stuff called ‘life’, I find that a simple routine works best!
What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
To feel my best, my biggest trick is to mindfully set an intention for the day when I wake up. This involves a breathing exercise (literally 2 minutes!) and setting my focus and goals for the day. Some days I forget to do this, typically when I travel, and then I find I feel a little less clear and a little more fragmented in how I approach my day. To look my best, it’s making sure I’m well hydrated – inside and out! I try and drink at least 1 gallon of water a day and my skin is always hydrated – on hot days with our Radiance Boosting Serum; on colder ones, with the serum and our Facial Recovery Elixir. Finally, one hack that I’ve been loving to create nice waves in my hair is to go to bed with my hair in loose braids, or to scrunch it up in several loose braids as I get ready. When I let it loose, voila! Gorgeous, beachy waves.
What’s your favorite part about running Poethique?
I get to meet some amazing people that are changing this industry, one day, one action at a time. My amazing soul sister, Patricia, who brings our vision to life, I’ve met only because of Poéthique. Green Beauty retailers like The Green Beauty Jungle Shop, Eminessences, Kuymi are bringing green beauty to interested people the world over! I met this amazing lady Olivia, out of Idaho who wants to bring green beauty to the center of the U.S. through her store Jasmine and Juice. There are an incredible number of folks out there, blogging, v-logging, IG-ing and persuading more and more people to switch to a cleaner form of skincare. Several I’ve connected with and call friends and I am so grateful that they continue to spread the mission on a daily basis!
What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
We love the trend where the industry is embracing a broader palette for a truly wide variety of skin colors – see Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty foundations. While the ingredient list on that brand means I won’t be able to use them, I’d love to see more green makeup brands embracing that trend!
What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
Beauty is so unique, individual, so personal, that I don’t think any trend needs to disappear per se. What might not works for one person could make another feel incredibly, powerfully beautiful, so really, there’s no trend that I’d like to see go away. What I do want to see though, and it’s happening slowly, is to see more brands embrace clean, green formulation. Not just clean ingredients, but also taking a look at the impact of their supply chains on the environment and on the people working on harvesting these amazing ingredients.
Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
That’s like choosing between my children :) So I’ll treat the question as if it were about my kids, and instead of picking a favorite, say what I love most about each. For the Radiance Boosting serum, which was our first product and remains a cult favorite today, it’s the ability to pack a powerful punch to your routine with one very simple step – use the serum right after you cleanse, before anything else. The Elixir is like the jewel of the collection – it contains an incredible number of fantastic oils and will literally revive your skin after a few days of consistent use! And the Milk is a wonderful and very critical first step to any routine – cleanse thoroughly without stripping the skin of it’s lipid barrier.
What sets Poethique apart from other lines on the market today?
At Poéthique, we dive deep into the science and structure of an ingredient, to understand why it has such cultural longevity. We mine whatever scientific information we can find on that ingredient and use that to determine the best way to make it. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without our super-guru product chief, Patricia Mirabito. She shares my vision completely and is such an amazing formulator!
We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies. What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out? (think superfoods, supplements, teas, elixirs and the like)
Growing up Indian, I am very used to the idea of getting as much nutrition as possible by combining various foods together, to make every bite count as much as possible. For eg. a lentil stew spiced with turmeric, coriander and cumin is loaded not only with the protein, fiber, vitamins and various essential minerals, but also, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant components from the spices. So really, it’s about combining foods to make sure every little bite is as packed with nutrients as possible.
I’m a huge believer in teas, essentially steeped infusions of various leaves, flowers to help support whatever intention I have for that day or even for that time of day. For e.g. green or black teas to start the day with vigor, and supplement anti-oxidants and then something relaxing like chamomile or chrysanthemum in the evenings. Apart from the health benefits, I find the ritual of making a cup of tea incredibly centering and almost meditative. It can ground me in the middle of a chaotic day.
The last one is hydration – the teas help but I also try and put away about a gallon of water every day!
Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
In my products: no petrochemical derived products, no synthetic surfactants, no silicones, no phthalates, no parabens.
What do you do to stay active and why?
It’s changed with the various phases of my life. Now that I have two young children, I am focusing on things we can do together – tennis, swimming, hikes, bicycling on local trails. But yoga is completely and utterly me-time. I’ll do a vinyasa practice or meditate as the day and my frame of mind demands!
Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty /wellness products?
I love W3LL People’s concealer, Ilia for their lipsticks and Ecobrow for their brow waxes.
What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned?
It has been to stop trying to have all the answers, all of the time. As a naturally data-driven person (I’m the kind of person who wants to know sources, citations, and won’t take anything at face value), it used to be hard for me to accept that I might not find the answer to a problem. I’d want to solve the problem because I thought that was the best way of helping the situation. But getting a brand going from scratch has shown me, that sometimes I do not have the answers, and that, that is ok. Sometimes, I have to feel my way through the situation, trust friends and mentors, or just make the best possible educated guess and keep moving forward!
Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust?
That there is one solution that fits everyone. I always say, don’t aspire to someone else’s perfection. Embrace what makes your skin uniquely yours. For e.g. I’ve recently got a couple of cherry angiomas, and it makes me think of my father who has a number of them. Instead of focusing on them as flaws, I think of them as a connection to my dad!
