If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 (beauty & wellness) products could you not live without? (You have food and water)
1.) Our Beauty Key 3: Perfect C™ Serum, Remarkable Retinal™ Serum, and Sun Shield SPF 28. This dynamic daily trio of products integrates a powerful ingredient combination of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and mineral sunscreen Zinc Oxide to perfect, correct, and protect all skin types. These ingredients are also the core beauty recommendations of leading dermatologists. The Perfect C™ Serum uses plant stem cells and a potent dose of the key antioxidant 17% L-Ascorbic Acid to enhance skin’s natural renewal process, combat signs of aging, and improve your overall skin tone. MyChelle uses L-Ascorbic Acid, the only form of Vitamin C that your skin recognizes, absorbs, and uses most efficiently.
2.) The Remarkable Retinal™ Serum uses Retinaldehyde (Retinal), Ceramide 3, and Plant Stem Cells to help target hyperpigmentation and combat the signs of aging for optimal results with less irritation.
3.) The Sun Shield SPF 28 is an environmentally/reef safe, full-spectrum, daily UVA/UVB 100% mineral sun protection that contains soothing aloe to rehydrate your skin and calm sun-induced irritation.
What is your morning beauty routine? evening?
I start with Refining Sugar Cleanser to gently cleanse and exfoliate. Next, I apply our Perfect C™ Serum (my damage-defending antioxidant super boost of 17% Vitamin C) and then add Clear Skin Pore Refiner to help refine pores and prime skin. I follow with lightweight Serious Hyaluronic Moisturizing Gel and Fabulous Eye Cream for maximum hydration without greasiness, as my skin tends to be oily. I add our Advanced Argan Oil when I travel to more dryer and colder climates. And, of course, ALWAYS, end with our Sun Shield SPF 28 sunscreen.
For evening, I cleanse with our Clear Skin Cranberry Cleanser that contains Willow Bark, a natural form of Salicylic Acid and a powerful anti-aging exfoliator ideal for adult acne. I follow with Remarkable Retinal™ Serum and Eye Cream to help promote skin renewal. Lastly, I apply both Bio-Firm™ Hydrogel Concentrate and Perfect C™ Radiance Lotion—a lightweight, yet powerful duo to increase hydration levels. Once a week, I use our new one-step, one-minute professional Perfect C™ PRO Speed Peel formulated with a powerful dose of active and stable 10% L-Ascorbic Acid, 1% L-Lactic Acid, Plant C-Stem™ and Licorice Extract. You truly feel like you have just had a professional treatment, and with a 25% pure citrus puree, it smells so delicious.
What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
1.) Get 8 hours of sleep.
2.) Drink plenty of water.
3.) Wear sunscreen! The sun is never your friend and it damages skin. And winter’s sun is just as dangerous as summer’s. Even in winter, aging UVA rays wreck havoc on our skin cells, making broad-spectrum protection 365 days a year, a must.
What’s your favorite part about running MyChelle Product Development?
Everyday, I am thrilled by the growing consumer demand for greater transparency and the resulting push for more companies to avoid ingredients that are dangerous to their consumers and the planet. For 16 years, we have focused on clean, conscious, and ethically sourced products with full transparency in ingredient labeling. MyChelle is also a co-founding member of the EWG VERIFIED™ program due to our product formulations that go above and beyond their green score in EWG’s Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database. In addition, we have always valued our partnerships—people, places, and planet. I am so proud of our sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing practices that include wind powered energy and recyclable paper cartons, plastic tubes, and glass bottle and jars. We also continue to support community organizations that protect our planet like The Wild Foundation and the Surfrider Foundation.
What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
Sustainability in formulating beauty products. As important as it is to produce safe, transparent, and natural or organic products, ‘natural’ simply isn’t as gratifying if ultimately it robs a community of non-renewable drinking water or diminishes healthy farmland. To claim true sustainability, a company’s focus must extend beyond the end result to encompass the ingredients complete journey from seed to shelf. We call this ‘good ingredient’ chemistry.
What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
NATURAL = SAFE.
There should never, ever, be a question in a consumer’s mind as to the safety of the product they are applying to their hands, face, or body. But the reality is consumer product companies—including natural ones—are not required to fully disclose the ingredients in their products. According to the FDA, “It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that products are labeled properly”.
Non-governmental, non-profit organizations including the Environmental Working Group (EWG) have made it their mission to inform consumers and push brands to commit to full transparency and development of clean products. MyChelle is proud to be a founding member of the EWG VERIFIED: For Your Health™ Program, the organizations new verification program designed to help shoppers quickly and easily identify personal care products that meet the organization’s strictest standards. EWG VERIFIED™ takes EWG’s well respected Skin Deep® rating system a step further, requiring companies to submit significantly more detailed information to confirm they: avoid ingredients that authoritative health bodies have flagged for potential health concerns; fully disclose their ingredients to consumers; ensure that their products are adequately preserved and free of contaminants; and follow good manufacturing practices.
Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
Perfect C Serum- 17% L-Ascorbic Acid. And as our number one selling serums, it’s our customer’s favorite as well. Clinical studies show that l-Ascorbic Acid, naturally found in the skin, is an anti-aging super star and essential for skin health. And it’s the ONLY ACTIVE form of Vitamin C for skin rejuvenation, photo-aging, and anti-oxidant protection. L-Ascorbic Acid increases skin’s natural renewal process, protects skin against environmental damage, stops inflammation in its tracks, brightens dark spots, and helps to combat acne scarring or pigmentation spots.
What sets MyChelle apart from other lines on the market today?
From our beginnings, we have always seen natural, clean science as an expectation, rather than a trend. Our 360-degree approach to beauty is to provide clean, conscious, and comprehensive skin care products that are bioactive, ethically sourced, and formulated with high-performance ingredients for superior results. Our products offer professional results for ingredients that do not compromise personal health and safety or the wellbeing and conservation of our environment.
Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
The ones that despite all of the warnings as toxic and irritating to the skin, are still used extensively in beauty and personal care products: Polyethylene Glycol (PEG); Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) /Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES); and Benzoyl Peroxide.
What do you do to stay active and why?
Having grownup in the Northwest, I need to be outdoors in order to recharge both mentally and physically. My obsessions are Hiking and Fly Fishing, and when I can’t be outside, I engage in Pilates for core strength.
Do you have a favorite beauty boosting meal you’d like to share a recipe for?
I’m a pechatarian (I eat seafood and some dairy) and a food ‘risk taker’—always looking for new recipes and open for new tastes and opportunities, so I don’t have any favorites, just my taste of the moment. I recently fell in love with the amazing spices and vegetarian dishes in Lebanese cuisine.
Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty /wellness products?
1.) I’m never without!
2.) Silicone, paraben and sulfate-free conditioning cleanser for cleansing my hair
3.) Concealer – I use it for an eye shadow base and for spot concealing. I also mix it with a moisturizer or sunscreen for a quick, light foundation.
Do you have a hero? If so, who and why?
My elegant, lifestyle-focused, incredibly active, naturally beautiful, and effortlessly chic 90-year-old mom. She also advocated wearing sunscreen as far back as I can remember. I just wish I would have listened to her sooner than I did!
What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned?
Live each day as if it’s your last. I read a quote recently from actor Christopher Walken that pretty much sums it all up: ‘None of us are getting out here alive, so please stop treating yourself as an after thought. Eat delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you are carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. There is no time for anything else.’
Any beauty/wellness myth’s you’d like to bust?
Chemical Free. There is simply no such thing. Everything in life and nature is made up of chemical elements. This is an over-used marketing term that incorrectly communicates ‘safety’ to consumers. Instead, companies need to be transparent in what ‘harsh’ chemicals are not in their products as well as disclose all ingredients—rather than use this false terminology.
