Inside Plaine Products

Plaine Products co-founders (and sisters) Lindsey McCoy and Ali Webster.

Plaine Products offers all natural personal care items in returnable, refillable, reusable aluminum bottles. It’s a unique company in that they provide cruelty free, all natural products with vegan ingredients; provide an alternative to single use plastics & are taking responsibility for their packaging. Plaine Products is a subscription based company (like us!). When your bottles are low, you order a refill, or you can subscribe and they will send the bottles automatically. When the refills come you’ll switch the pumps over and send back the empty bottles in the refill box. Plaine Products covers the cost. Then they clean the bottles, refill them and reuse them. No waste!

What is your morning beauty routine? evening?
LOL, I need one! There’s not much routine in my life these days, I definitely use face wash, exfoliate and moisturize, but I never take enough time for myself to do it properly. It’s a life goal to be better about my own skin care.

What’s your favorite part about running Plaine Products?
First, I started Plaine Products to solve my own problem: finding effective, natural hair and skin care that didn’t come in a plastic bottle. I’m never going to be DIY for personal care products and I couldn’t find anything on the market that met my needs. So I’m happy to use our stuff knowing that it’s good for me and the planet. A close second is our customers. They send us notes when they send back their bottles saying thanks. We get emails of appreciation. It means so much that people take the time to reach out and say they are happy to have found us.

What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
I got into the beauty industry backwards. I worked in the environmental nonprofit word for the last 10 years and was looking to reduce my consumption of single-use plastic after I heard there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. I started Plaine Products with my sister and we found an amazing partner that was willing to make toxin-free, vegan products for us to compliment our aluminum, environmentally friendly bottles. So many companies are making great sustainable, quality products, I hope there are more conversations about sustainable packaging and how providers and consumers can work together so that we don’t fill out oceans, and our planet, with plastic. Plastic lasts for hundreds of years, we can’t keep just tossing it out without facing the consequences at some point!

Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
We just added a body lotion that I love! It’s light enough to rub in easily, but thick enough to keep my skin feeling hydrated throughout the day. Plus I love the rosemary, mint, vanilla combo scent!

Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
Any that I can’t pronounce!

What do you do to stay active and why?
I get bored easily so I’m constantly mixing it up. I love yoga for keeping me sane and forcing me to slow down. I jog/walk for the convenience of being able to put on my shoes and walk out the door. I just found kick boxing, which I love. I know I’m late to the party on that one, but there is something satisfying and stress reducing about punching and kicking a bag! Running your own business like this means there are a lot of factors out of your control, so exercise helps me manage my stress and ensure I sleep at night, for which my husband, my son and my business partner are thankful. I’m no fun without sleep.

Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty /wellness products?
I’m in love with Meow Meow Tweet’s deodorant stick in a cardboard tube, right now I’ve got the eucalyptus lemon. I really worked hard to find natural deodorant that works for me and this is the best of the bunch so far. It might have helped that I used the kaia detox stick before making the switch! Goodbeing introduced me to Gaffer & Child’s facial scrub – which I adore. Not only does it work and smell great, but I love that it comes in a glass jar. This is a bit outside the wellness realm, but I also recommend The Simply Co’s laundry detergent. It’s got three ingredients and comes in a reusable glass mason jar!

Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust?
I think there’s a belief that just because a product is natural, or vegan, it’s not as effective as ones that are full of chemicals. While there are some ineffective natural products out there, there are also lots of amazing ones, as the Goodbeing box proved to me. Not all natural products are created equal, but it’s worth a little experimentation to find a toxin-free product that works for your hair/skin.
