Cheri is a wife to her high school sweetheart and a work-at-home mother of two little girls, a blue and gold macaw, a black lab, a rescue pup, two tiny turtles and one Fiddler crab named Bubbles (who was only supposed to live a few weeks, fast forward 3 years) — all of whom she adores. Much to their delight, you can meet them on Instagram. They live a blessed life in a house nestled not far from the shores of Lake Michigan, just outside of the Windy city.
A self proclaimed ‘product junkie’, Cheri started out collecting and testing cosmetics at an early age. From her humble beginnings as the president of the Lip Smacker Club in the first grade to her present position, she has an insatiable appetite all things beauty related. She has over 25 years experience in many facets of the beauty industry. She’s always in search of the latest and greatest beauty treatments, healthy ingredients and up and coming fragrance notes.
A “constant crafter” who “loves color,” Cheri started sharing pictures over social media of products she’d made herself, to which she received a flood of questions, primarily: ‘Where can I get that?’ Cheri would respond with diy recipes and tricks and tips, but the real answer was that it took a lot of time: Creating new products typically meant hours spent poring over fashion + beauty magazines and Pinterest, “surfing and curating”, then mixing and matching hard-to-find ingredients to find the best blend. Why, she often wondered, wasn’t there a site where she could find all the beauty items she needed in one place?
Judging from the outpouring of responses she received, it quickly became evident that a lot of moms didn’t want to hassle creating products, yet wanted healthy, hand crafted cosmetics: “It was incredible to see that there were so many moms out there like me.”
“I’m passionate about making healthy, cruelty-free products with minimal ingredients that deliver real results. I’m also committed to keeping prices affordable so moms do not have to feel guilty about purchasing my products” says Cheri.
Motherhood has twenty-four-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week responsibilities. There are no designated days off, vacation time doesn’t seem to be addressed in the job contract either. “If we don’t take some time for ourselves, if we don’t arrange for a day off here or there or if we don’t take a few minutes for ourselves everyday, we will find ourselves in a rut, that is difficult to climb out of”.” says Cheri.
In her spare time, Cheri enjoys doing projects with her daughters, goofing around with her husband and all things mom + entrepreneur = mompreneur. She’s a crafter at heart, color lover, sweats shimmer + sparkle, fascinated with essential oils, obsessed with Halloween (including a full-fledged miniature village), loves anything + everything DIY, fairy gardens, making homemade limoncello and cooking for her family — in that order. What is your morning beauty routine? evening? While I want to say to do the whole 18 step Korean beauty routine, it’s not true. Less is more for me. I use a konjac sponge in the morning and at night and apply our Mojo serum. I use our Turmeric Scrub + Mask 2-3 times a week. I have bottles of our floral essences stashed everywhere– at my desk, in my car, my bag and I spritz them on throughout the day for a quick pick me up.
What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best? I look and feel my best when I’m well rested, drink a lot water and get outside a bit everyday. I believe mindset is important, so I practice daily gratitude and try and do a quick 5-10 minute meditation everyday.
What’s your favorite part about running Orglamix? I enjoy almost everything. It’s hard to pick one thing. I really love creating new products and colors, but I’d have to say the best part of running Orglamix is interacting with customers.
What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow? I love color, so any trend that allows people to experiment with makeup makes me happy. The unicorn makeup trend and the mermaid makeup trend, they’re about self expression, which makes me happy. I also really love the ombre look on eyes, nails, hair and especially lips. The red lip is a classic, but sometimes it’s fun to step things up a notch. I love a wearable ombré lip, something that’s not the extreme variety.
What beauty trend would you like to see disappear? Floating eyeliner. It’s not for the faint of heart. Even when it’s well executed with the rest of the makeup kept minimal, it looks bizarre to me.
Of the products you make, which is your favorite? My favorites change, depending on whatever new creation I’m working on at the time. My steadfast favorites are those products I use everyday. I’m a busy mom, so my go-to favorites are Au Naturale Mascara, Illume for a healthy glow & the Lip + Cheek tint because it’s so versatile
What sets Orglamix apart from other lines on the market today? Speed to market. We can create new products and shades within 24 hours. I think it also surprises people that if you send us a text or email, I respond personally.
Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs? I believe healthy cosmetics are a right, not a privilege. We’ve banned 1500 toxic chemicals from our makeup. We’re dedicated to making the best formulas that won’t harm you in the long run. We avoid parabens, sulfates, artificial colors, petrochemicals, phthalates, GMOs and Triclosan to name a few.
What do you do to stay active and why? I’m happy if I put 10,000 steps on my FitBit, which sadly, I don’t do everyday. Some days, like today, I’ll be on my computer from morning to night. I’ve been known to do laps around my kitchen island or office. I walk 3-4 times a week with a friend. If I’m alone, it’s hard for me to motivate.
Do you have a favorite beauty boosting meal you’d like to share a recipe for? Nope. I’m a terrible cook. I’m lucky to have a husband that loves to cook. Thanks, babe!
Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty /wellness products? I love to test new products, especially anything from Free People or Anthropologie. Right now, I’m loving Level Shower Bombs for in shower aromatherapy, Moon Rivers Naturals Peppermint Lava Salt Hand & Body Wash and Beauty Chef Probiotic Skin Refiner.
Do you have a hero? If so, who and why? Bobbi Brown. I’d love to meet her someday. I’ve read all her books. I love her approach to enhancing natural beauty. She wants everyone to look like themselves. She sells something like 21 million products each year. It’s just mind blowing. She started with 10 wearable lipsticks. I started with ten eyeshadows. A funny story– my daughters were little, maybe 3 and 5, I had given them some shimmer sticks to “test”. They were super sparkly and colorful and went to the local hotdog stand for lunch with their sitter. I was back home working. A women approached them and told them how pretty they looked. They chatted with her and told her that their mom makes the best eyeshadow in the world. My sitter comes home and tells me the woman was Bobbi Browns mom! I laughed. Then cried that I missed the moment.
What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned? When you work for yourself, you have no excuses. It’s all up to you. It’s overwhelming at times. I’m learning to give myself grace. It’s a process. I’m learning it’s okay to fail, as long as I’m moving forward.Life is short, so I try to practice awareness and embrace and enjoy the journey.
