Organically Wonderful Personal Care Products are better for your body, wallet and world. The company was started by a brother & sister duo who wanted a dry shampoo formula that was non-toxic, non-messy & easy to use.

What’s the backstory?

Back in January 2017, My sister (Kait) and I attended the Indie Beauty Expo in Los Angeles. Seeing so many wonderful natural/organic companies alongside conventional beauty companies was wonderful. Hair, makeup, and skin care all in one place, but none of the companies offered the one thing I had been looking to replace: an easy to use dry shampoo.

The companies attending only had harmful aerosol dry shampoo or natural/organic dry shampoo in an annoying shaker bottle that I had to match with my hair color. Both categories were still on the pricey side.

On the drive back to Las Vegas, my sister and I talked about how great the Expo was, but how disappointed we were that we couldn’t find an easy to use, natural/organic dry shampoo. We couldn’t help but wonder “why hasn’t anyone done this yet?”

Figuring I couldn’t be the only one searching, I decided it was time I came up with a solution. My first thought was to make a spray on dry shampoo, because it would be so much easier and cleaner than a shaker bottle.

Once I got home, I got in touch with a chemist to start brainstorming alternatives to the standard, toxic Butane propellant. We tried all sorts of options, but, unfortunately, the ingredients wouldn’t mix without the nozzle clogging. Months in and we needed a new approach.

Around this time I started venting to my brother about my idea and the challenges so far. I just didn’t want to give up and he really believed in me. Right then and there we became partners. With his help, I moved full steam ahead with a renewed mission and excitement.

After months of more trial & error, we perfected our formula and a delivery system that would spray without any harmful propellant. We now had a product we were proud to call our own and to share with others.

With something more than an idea, we started to share our product with friends, family, and respected Green Beauty influencers. We started to receive amazing feedback and we were thrilled! Strangers started asking when they could get their hands on it.

We had already been in talks with raw material vendors and bottle manufacturers in various countries that would allow us to scale up and sell to our growing audience. We hit a number of road bumps along the way, but we were able to polish our design and concept further.

After a few more months of prep and polish, we’ve launched our website and started our marketing engine at full speed.

We’re excited (and nervous) to see where this adventure takes us. We hope it will be to a place that’s better for your Body, your Wallet, and the World! -Ashleigh

We loved the Organically Wonderful story so much, we decided to dive deeper, and ask the team about their day-to-day lives, favorite products, ingredients they avoid + more.

Co-Founder Ashleigh

What’s your favorite part about running Organically Wonderful?
I would have to say my favorite thing about running Organically Wonderful is talking with our customers. We are a very small company. In leu of this, I get to chat to a lot of our customers, and I love hearing when our product works great for them or we filled a need that they couldn’t fill before. I started Organically Wonderful to help other women out. To know I’m doing that, even in a small way, is the best part of it all!

What sets Organically Wonderful apart from other lines on the market today?
I would say our sustainability sets us apart from others. When I first started I really wanted to make sure that we were not adding additional harm to our planet. (This is why we offer refill packets for our dry shampoo.) We really strive not to use plastic containers unless they are not meant to be single use, but refilled and used indefinitely.

What is your morning routine? evening?
To be honest, I don’t have the best of morning or evening routines. I am first and foremost a mom of two wonderful boys who demand a lot of time from me – sunrise to sundown! So, when I haven’t plopped on my bed out of sheer exhaustion, I normally try to jump in the shower every night and wash off my make-up, (if I had the time to put it on that day). If I’m feeling up to it i’ll indulge in a body polish. After that, its pretty much putting on some face oil, brushing my teeth & passing out (before my baby wakes me up).

My 3 tips for feeling your best is…

  • Try to have your hair done. I find that if my hair is styled, I feel like I’m good to leave the house (even if I don’t have time to do makeup).
  • Always get dressed. It takes just as much time to put on a t-shirt and jeans as it does sweatpants. I promise you’ll feel better about yourself (I know I do).
  • Drink lots of water! I keep water close by me all day because it makes your body feel better.

What’s a trend in the wellness/beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
I would really love to see sustainable product options grow in the beauty industry!

Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty/wellness/lifestyle products?
I would have to say Kiss Me Honey Lip Balm in coconut, 100 Percent Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm, and Naked Truth Beauty Highlighter in Lumos Beam!

Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
I try to live an 80/20 lifestyle as it can be hard to stay away from everything 100 percent of the time. That being said, I most definitely stay away from fragrance, FD&C dyes and Aluminum.

What’s your favorite part about running Organically Wonderful?
Working with family on something that stretches our comfort zone and to see others appreciate what we’ve created.

What sets Organically Wonderful apart from other lines on the market today?
We’re not driven purely by profit and we are serious about what we stand for: clean personal care products that help everyday people live better lives. Our journey so far as been long and slow. This has allowed us to do our best work and deliver products that we really believe in. We aren’t making products just to turn a profit; we’re doing it to create something that we want to use on our own bodies. We also are invested in experimenting to create real value – not just commodity.

What was the first product available to customers to purchase?
Our Dry Shampoo. We did a small pre-order launch in march 2018 to validate the idea and decide if it was really a worthy adventure to embark on.

Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
I can’t say much because my favorite products are still in development, but it’s a micro-exfoliant unlike any other I’ve ever seen.

What is your morning routine? evening?
Green tea and mindfulness exercises. I don’t really like coffee, but green tea has just enough kick to get me going and I enjoy the ritual. Mindfulness is important because I have a lot of responsibilities from day-to-day. It doesn’t help that I have ADHD, so getting my thoughts in order, and choosing something to just start on, is a regular goal.

What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?

  • Maintain. Health is all about being consistent. It’s not easy, but that’s how we can get the best results.
  • Exercise is not just about looking great. It’s about giving your brain the fuel it needs to be great.
  • Treasure your skin…it takes a beating on the regular! Give it some love and you’ll look the way you feel.

What’s a trend in the wellness/beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
Less disposable packaging. I understand why packaging is needed in physical retail space, but with online commerce, things are changing, and our habits as producers need to change too (for the better).

What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
Green washing. Consumers need to be informed, not brainwashed.

Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust?
Everything is a chemical and even water can be toxic. Be aware of how others are influencing your thoughts.

Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
Highly synthetic ingredients. Some synthetic materials are acceptable, but others are cheap solutions with risky side effects. Again, I try to be informed on what I’m exposing my body to, so I try not to drop blanket statements like “always avoid X”.

We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies. What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out?

  • Use Bio-available Vitamin C. Not everything is absorbed well in your body, and Vitamin C is one of those things that you might be flushing straight through your system. Vitamin C is a miracle in what it can do for our bodies.
  • Eat less often. It might sound weird, but studies show how often you eat can have more of an impact on your body’s ability to maintain its health than how much and what you eat.

What do you do to stay active and why?
I try to do breathing exercises because we tend to not breathe deeply enough. I also love playing with kids. When you’re moving and having fun, like kids do, you aren’t focused on the effort, you’re just doing what’s natural.

What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned?
You will fail, often. Don’t fear it. Search out opportunities to fail, because that’s the only way you can succeed!
