A Look Inside :: Juice Beauty

Karen Behnke

Juice Beauty is a super power in the Green Beauty world! This progressive company uses organic, pure ingredients to formulate skincare and make-up that competes with top conventional products. We have loved Juice Beauty for many years, and we are always excited to bring you their amazing goodies in our Monthly Boxes! We had the honor of getting to dig a little deeper with Juice Beauty founder Karen Behnke. Read on to find out more about her beauty secrets & the company at large.

1. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 (beauty & wellness) products could you not live without? (You have food and water)
That’s literally impossible as I’d have to have my whole beauty regimen with me but maybe I could whip up a coconut, salt water cleanser on the island…so let’s see:
Juice Beauty’s SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen for my entire body as it’s water resistant and tested to last up to 80 minutes
Juice Beauty’s CC Cream SPF 30 for my face as that would be an amazing moisturizing, age-defying sunscreen with lots of multi-tasking skincare benefits
Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Eye Treatment

2. What is your morning beauty routine? Evening?
I get up at around 6:30ish in the morning and after saying goodbye to our kids who now drive to high school, I head out to exercise usually in the form of a run, bike or swim often with my husband who is a cardiologist. Sometimes I take morning phone meetings on one of our decks overlooking the San Francisco Bay; or I head immediately to our beautiful sustainable headquarters in Marin County located just over the Golden Gate Bridge and right between San Francisco and the wine country.
As far as my beauty routine goes, I rotate between Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular and the Green Apple skincare collections. First, I cleanse with either the Stem Cellular 2-in-1 Cleanser or the Green Apple Gel Cleanser. Then I apply the Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Booster Serum or the Green Apple Age Defy Serum. Next, in the morning I moisturize using the Stem Cellular CC Cream in the Desert Glow shade (and at night either the Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer or the Green Apple Age Defy Moisturizer). If I am with the press or our retailers, I will finish with Juice Beauty’s Phyto-Pigments foundation, concealer, eyeliner, and mascara. At night, I follow the same routine, although 1-2x/weekly I use our powerful Green Apple Peel for exfoliation and instant results. At night or before going out I always use our Stem Cellular Instant Eye Lift Algae Masks—the immediate difference with tired eyes and crows’ feet is stunning.

3. What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
Drink lots and lots of water
Exercise daily and work up a sweat, it’s a natural detox and beauty enhancer
Of course use beauty products made with certified organic ingredients that are not formulated with petroleum or unnecessary potentially toxic ingredients

4. What’s your favorite part about running Juice Beauty?
Well it’s a tie between the products and the people! At Juice Beauty that’s what it’s all about…the Products and the People (our employees and our customers). At Juice Beauty we follow our 10 Eco-Values  for all of our company planning and development and if we have a great and motivated group of employees and wonderful products….then our customers will be happy!

5. What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
Of course the Clean Beauty trend. Customers are becoming more informed about their beauty product purchases, and they want performance but they want non-toxic ingredients.

6. What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
Harmful fads following the latest hot product whether it works or has terrible ingredients…just because it made the press. For instance Brazilian blowouts and I’d also like to see parents stop aerosol spraying chemical sunscreens all over their kids and having all those chemicals blowing into their kids lungs, our ocean water, beaches and pools.

7. Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
Impossible to name! That would be like Sophie’s Choice….I love all of our products for different reasons but right now I’m particularly proud of our new Phyto-Pigments makeup collection that we developed under the direction of our Creative Director, Gwyneth Paltrow. Seventy-eight new high-performance plant-pigment makeup products that are, like our high efficacy skincare, designed to compete against conventional chemical performance.

8. What sets Juice Beauty apart from other lines on the market today?
Our products that have the highest certified organic ingredient content among any prestige companies but also have the performance of conventional chemical products; and our people. Juice Beauty’s team is nothing short of amazing. We have broken the cycle of healthful products not selling well.

9. We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies. What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out? (think superfoods, supplements, teas, elixirs and the like)
Since I started my career in the health and wellness industry and came to beauty from that area, I truly believe that beauty starts with a health and wellness base. Daily aerobic fitness (running, hiking, power walking, biking, swimming, or classes) and great nutrition are a must for healthy beauty. My normal food intake generally consists of wild salmon, organic whole grains, organic vegetables and fruits and of course chocolate. Staying away from processed foods is so important and stick with organic olive oil for your fats. Lastly, whatever form of relaxation works for you whether it’s yoga, meditation, or relaxing with your family…practice it as often as possible.

10. Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
We have listed the top Unworthy Thirty on our Clean Beauty page; (well don’t count because I think there might be 31 or 32 listed) as well as hundreds of ingredients we avoid using at all costs. If I have to call out a few it would be synthetic fragrances due to the incredible endocrine disruption concerns, and also artificial dyes for the same reasons; parabens due to their link to breast cancers, and petroleum-based ingredients due to their association with dioxane and other potentially harmful chemicals as well as the conflict that drilling for petroleum creates in our world.

11. What do you do to stay active and why?
Since I’ve been a triathlete for years, rotating running, biking and swimming is what I do daily; however, as I age, I’m doing more hiking and trying to squeeze in yoga.
