Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
Oh man, I am a label reading snob! And the reason is that what we put in and on our bodies directly impacts our gut health and our overall health. In fact, the composition of your gut bacteria can shift in as little as a week, based on the foods you eat. Depending on your daily choices, food can either be the most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.

That said, I look out for anything artificial—obviously colors, preservatives, pesticides, and chemicals—but I also do my best to avoid GMOs, the possibility of antibiotics or hormones (especially in meats, fish and dairy products), gluten, emulsifiers, and sugars. When it comes to sweet treats, I try to make sure our family eats foods with natural sweeteners like honey, agave, maple syrup, dates, and even bananas.

The junk that has snuck into our foods (even the so-called healthy ones) is maddening to me and requires commitment and vigilance to successfully avoid. We try to shop on the outside aisles of the supermarket where the items with the shortest shelf life are and to eat whole foods, closest to their natural state. We typically eat a diet high in vegetables, fruits, protein, and fat—but the good ones like coconut oil, egg yolk, nuts, seeds, and avocado—and fairly low in grains.

We’re also a little superfood obsessed at our house—from spirulina to nutritional yeast, hemp seeds, chia, bee pollen, acacia, turmeric, acerola, matcha, acai, and collagen protein, you name it, we’ve got it! We start off each morning with a warm lemon and sea salt water and then a green smoothie that I swear could send you to the moon!

What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
In the last 10 years, scientists have discovered a world under the microscope that is changing the way we view health and wellness: it’s called the microbiome, and it’s so vital to our bodily function that it is often referred to as the “final identified human organ.”

We’re now learning that we can both look and feel our best by nurturing the good bacteria that live in and on our bodies.

Here are my top 3 tips for taking care of ourselves and living in harmony with your microbes:

Victor Hugo famously said, “All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.”

It is my belief that the importance of microbial health is an idea whose time has finally come. Some predict the antibiotic era—going strong for nearly a century—is coming to a close now that we’re beginning to experience the repercussions of antibiotic overuse and misuse.
