What’s your favorite part about running Gaffer & Child?
The people. Maybe it’s a bit cliché, but I feel fortunate to work with so many amazing people who help make the product line a success. From the chemist who helps me develop sustainable and effective products, to the designer who makes them look great, and folks who help with marketing and the million other aspects involved with starting a business—I find it incredibly rewarding to know that these talented people choose to work with me because they believe in the product and the mission as much as I do.
What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
The inspiration for Gaffer&Child came from my explicit desire to see more natural products on the market. I’d still like to see that grow. There is a significant population of people who care as much about what they put on their body as what they put into it, and it’s been great to provide that demographic a healthy, alternative choice to commercial products. But I’m not sure I can really be happy until the average consumer knows what goes into their skin care products, and knows to care.
We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies. What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out? (think superfoods, supplements, teas, elixirs and the like)
An ingredient that I’ve seen increase in popularity is lycopene. It’s great for protecting skin from sun damage and luckily it’s easy to find in a pretty common fruit: tomatoes. Scientists have linked lycopene oil to a 30% improvement in skin protection! Which is wild. We use the concentrated oil in our products, but eating tomatoes is another way to get a lycopene boost.
We use lavender in almost all of our products because the scent is so wonderful and fresh. But lavender is also beneficial for both cleansing and relaxing—luckily it’s also delicious in desserts and drinks.
Lemons are great for skin, too—as well as aiding digestion and providing almost 200% of your recommended daily vitamin C intake. We use lemon essential oil in our cleanser, but it’s not hard to find ways to get those benefits through your diet. After all, when life gives you lemons…
Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
It’s not so much a specific ingredient as kinds of ingredients. Parabens, GMOs, artificial dyes, or petroleum for example. That we have to say we don’t use petroleum in products that go on skin, because other companies do, is why educating people about the ingredients in their products is so important to us. But we also care about the process of making the products. We never test on animals, and support sustainably and ethically produced ingredients, sourcing locally every chance we get.
What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned?
A number of idioms come to mind, like, “you get out of it what you put into it,” or “success doesn’t happen overnight.” Which is to say, the reason I appreciate the people who help promote the product, and the loyal customers who love using it, and the hard-working farmers who grow our ingredients, is because it’s a lot of hard work and I couldn’t have done it alone. Lots of people have ideas for companies, but to see that idea become a reality is a rare thing. And to have people rally around it? It’s humbling. It’s hard not to learn from that.
