If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 (beauty & wellness) products could you not live without? (You have food and water)
Super C+ Lemon Peel daily moisturizer. The environmental protectants will help with the sand and the sea salt air.
What is your morning beauty routine? evening?
I’m lucky enough to have developed my own beauty routines! Right now, I’m using our brightening SuperC+ Lemon Peel line for day, as it is great way to wake up and it’s perfect to use under my makeup.
I use our 4-step hydrating SuperA+ Prickly Pear set for my evening beauty ritual. The natural prickly pear fragrance in our Sleep Tight Radiance Cream gives me aromatherapy life as I unwind.
What 3 tips or tricks can you share for feeling and looking your best?
Switch up your beauty ritual every few months. I like to change with the seasons to keep my skin guessing. Sometimes changing just one product can recharge your glow!
Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin from harmful wrinkle-causing UV rays.
Experiment with layering your serums for a great vitamin boost. Remember that the thinnest product should go on first.
What’s your favorite part about running American Botanics?
Giving back! The coolest part about running American Botanics is serving as an advocate for skin of all kinds. Getting to donate proceeds to melanoma awareness and supporting our team’s own badass Stage 3 melanoma Warrior, Tracy, is an amazing privilege. Her strength is such an inspiration that makes me work harder to do my part in finding a cure. I love that we get to bring the sparkle to so many smiling faces while making kindness cool.
What’s a trend in the beauty industry you’d like to see grow?
I’d like to see the green beauty trend continue to grow. There’s a misconception that natural and organic ingredients are watered down, but you can get spa grade results with high-performing natural ingredients! Let’s get back to the basics of taking care of our skin with natural products that work without harmful chemicals. And that goes the same for our make-up, hair products, and body care. Our skin is our largest organ and we need to take care of it!
What beauty trend would you like to see disappear?
I’d like to see the tanning beauty trend go away. Not only does tanning cause pre-mature aging and wrinkles, but it also can cause skin cancer. Did you know using a tanning bed just one time increases your chances of developing melanoma by 75%? That’s a huge statistic!
We need to embrace the awesome skin we were born with, take care of it, and show our daughters and nieces how to rock the skin they’re in. We can build their confidence by teaching them natural is beautiful.
Of the products you make, which is your favorite?
As we head into summer, I’m obsessed with our SuperC+ Skin Perfecting Tonic pads. They have a little texture so I get some mild exfoliation as well as vitamin C and glycolic acid boosts that make my skin feel super sparkly! To make sure I’m not sun-sensitive during the day, I usually use the tonic in the evening in combination with our soothing SuperA+ Hydrating Serum and Radiance Cream.
What sets American Botanics apart from other lines on the market today?
American Botanics is naturally illuminating vegan skin care powered by botanicals and made cruelty free in the USA using 100% natural ingredients. It was founded with a cause in mind. We are an indie woman-owned company that is tenacious about getting the word out about effective natural skin care so we can raise more money and combat cancer.
Most of my friends were frustrated with having to put together products and figure out what should be layered where. I want green beauty to be accessible and approachable, so we put together two product lines with 4 steps in each. This way, you can choose your own skin care adventure. Each product is labeled with a number 1-4 so you can easily identify how the products are ideally used. Each system can be used in its entirety or mixed and matched.
We all know healthy beauty starts with what we put in our bodies. What 3 tips can you share about beauty from the inside out? (think superfoods, supplements, teas, elixirs and the like) Drinking warm lemon water as the first step in my morning routine has made my mornings much easier. Lemon is an excellent and rich source of vitamin C, which protects against immune system deficiencies. It also helps our skin as it prevents the formation of wrinkles and acne.
Smoothie it up! Jump start your day with a quick and easy blend of baby spinach, frozen berries, and a half banana blended with almond milk and a boost of plant based protein powder. Getting fueled up with fruits and veggies helps me make better choices, even if the day gets really crazy.
I’m also a big believer in green tea. It is chock full of antioxidants, can lower your risk of cancer, and lower your risk of diabetes. The boost of caffeine doesn’t make me feel as jittery as coffee.
Serious stuff. Which ingredients do you avoid at all costs?
I absolutely avoid parabens, petrochemicals, and phthalates because they have been linked to an increase risk of breast cancer. Our bodies can absorb as much as five pounds of cosmetic chemicals every year. And, anything absorbed through the skin may be as high as 10 times the concentration of an oral dose. Scary stuff!
What do you do to stay active and why?
I like getting out for a walk in our neighborhood where we have a lot of paths, but my favorite activity is engaging in some high energy lip sync battles, complete with dramatic interpretive dance. 90’s pop music is best. It makes me laugh so hard! And that is great for my heart and soul.
