What’s your favorite part about running CLOVE + HALLOW?

Building my team. It’s cheesy but true! It is also one of the trickiest parts, but I feel so privileged to have the opportunity. When I’m low on motivation, I think about the fact that they trusted in me and my vision enough to come onboard despite the risks and concessions that come with working for an early stage startup. I’ve teared up in my office looking out at everybody working together in the pit more times than I care to admit. It’s surreal.

Of the products you make, which is your favorite?

Conceal + Correct, hands down. I never release products that I don’t 100% believe in, but I use concealer every single day so it was a particularly special project. After nearly 2 years and at least 20 iterations, we finally got it right. The texture, the coverage, the way it looks on the skin…it’s just magical. Considering it is typically our best-selling product, I think most people would agree!

Not including your own brand, what are 3 of your must have beauty/wellness/lifestyle products?

I’m a huge fan of Herbivore Botanicals’ Blue Tansy Face Mask. I have dry, sensitive, and acne-prone skin, which is a really tough combination because treating one often exacerbates the others, but Blue Tansy’s formula tackles all of it at once. Honestly, I could go on about it forever…I think I’ve probably converted at least 40 people at this point! I also really like wearing my Fitbit watch. My days fill up and go off track pretty often and it’s really easy to forget to consider my health/fitness when that happens. The buzzing of my Fitbit when I hit milestones or to remind me to move more really works. Lastly, making time and space to be alone is one of my biggest wellness tips. Whether you’re an extrovert or introvert, having time to yourself to do as you please and be with your thoughts without interruption is such an important act of self-care.

Any beauty/wellness myths you’d like to bust?

Something I talk about a lot is the belief that natural = good and synthetic = bad. It’s not that simple. All ingredients, natural or otherwise, are chemicals and any chemical in the wrong dosage or delivery format can cause physical harm or internal toxicity. At CLOVE + HALLOW, our focus is on creating the most natural formula we can without sacrificing safety or performance. I really believe that distinction is important. For example, I often come across water- and aloe-based formulas without any sort of broad spectrum preservative. Where there is water there is bacteria and fungi, and without a clinically-tested synthetic preservative, both will grow. I completely agree with the sentiment that a lot of synthetics are dangerous and the lack of regulation around them is disturbing, but ignoring basic science for the sake of an all-natural label is also harmful.

What’s the hardest or most important life lesson you’ve learned?

Remember the mission. If it’s a good one, it shouldn’t change much over time. With the prevalence of social media and other digital touchpoints, it’s really easy to get distracted by what other brands are doing and lose sight of your own unique mission. Take clean beauty as an example. Small batch vs third party manufacturing, clean vs all-natural, boutique vs mass vs e-commerce distribution, sustainability, free-from claims, etc…there is so much going on! I have to remind myself that just because another brand is having success in one corner of this industry doesn’t mean that should be CLOVE + HALLOW’s corner. We are creating our own corner.
